5 Question with George Tunnicliffe, Head of IT Operations National Theatre

Could you define what your job role details and your day to day routine? Our team at the NT covers everything the theatre does apart from the magic on stage, we leave that to the professionals! We look after the e-commerce and ticketing website, the retail outlets and bars, the offices, the live broadcasts and all the supporting functions of the theatre, we support the travelling productions and over 1500 staff here.
How is your organisation approaching cybersecurity? We have been ensuring our platforms match what the organisation needs, by examining what we do we have aligned ourselves carefully to manage the data flows. In our case we have paid particular attention to making sure we work alongside our colleagues so we are enabling people to work securely, not just blocking. It’s a more difficult proposition but one that ultimately maintains a better working relationship.
What were the biggest challenges in 2018? Ensuring we maintain a credible defence across the hybrid cloud we employ, design processes that support the changes such as automated vulnerability scans.
What can we expect from the National Theatre in the next 12 months? Specifically in regards to cybersecurity? Automation of assessing our setups and vulnerabilities as we change environments and set ups.
What are you most looking forward to at the show? Being part of the panel and looking into how other people secure their changes, meeting actual people with real experiences is the highlight of any show for me. I’ll also be looking to the exhibitors for the solutions from them about securing change.
